How to & Troubleshooting
💪 Quick How-To: Using Your Ratchet Strap Properly
Step 1: Hook it Up
Attach each end to a solid anchor point (none of that dodgy stuff). Make sure the strap isn’t twisted.
👉 If the hook’s not quite playing nice, grab one of our 30cm soft shackles — perfect for tight or awkward anchor points.
Step 2: Feed the Strap Through the Ratchet
Push the loose end through the mandrel (that spinny barrel in the ratchet), then pull it tight.
Step 3: Protect the Strap
If you're strapping down against anything metal or sharp (like trailers, trays, or toolboxes), chuck on a Tuff Tools Strap Protector to stop wear and tear.
👉 Straps are tough — but not invincible.
Step 4: Crank It
Pump the handle up and down until your load’s snug. Tight, but not “snap a strap and bust your knuckles” tight.
Step 5: Lock it In
Fold the handle all the way down so it clicks shut. Boom — you're set.
😤 “It’s Too Tight, I Can’t Get It Loose!”
So, you’ve gone full gorilla on the ratchet and now it’s locked up tighter than your mate’s wallet. Don’t panic — here’s how to undo it without snapping anything (especially your patience).
⚠️ IMPORTANT — READ THIS FIRST:
If you’ve tightened the strap too much, there’s a good chance that pressing the red release lever and pushing the handle down won’t do squat.
That’s because the mechanism is under too much pressure to release.
👉 You’ll need to relieve some tension first — don’t just reef on it or you’ll risk bending the gear.
Step 1: Find the Release Lever
Look for the little red metal tab just under the ratchet handle. That’s the release lever.
Hold it down firmly — no tapping, you’ve gotta commit.
Step 2: Open It All the Way
While holding the release tab, swing the handle all the way back until it lies flat.
✅ This will disengage the ratchet — if it doesn’t move, skip to the next step to sort it out.
Step 3: Push Down Slightly
Push down gently on the top bar while the handle is fully open — this takes the pressure off the spool.
👉 You might need to lean into it a bit if the strap was cranked down hard.
Step 4: Pull the Strap Free
Now the strap should slide back through easily.
Still stuck? Give it a wiggle, maybe some sweet talk — or just blame your mate who tied it down.
Step 5: Still No Luck?
If it’s still jammed after all that — chances are you’ve gone full Hulk and cooked it.
The strap might be damaged or the ratchet twisted from over-tightening.
👉 Lesson learned: tight is good, but there’s such a thing as too tight.
