How to & Troubleshooting
πͺ Quick How-To: Using Your Ratchet Strap Properly
Step 1: Hook it Up
Attach each end to a solid anchor point (none of that dodgy stuff). Make sure the strap isnβt twisted.
π If the hookβs not quite playing nice, grab one of our 30cm soft shackles β perfect for tight or awkward anchor points.
Step 2: Feed the Strap Through the Ratchet
Push the loose end through the mandrel (that spinny barrel in the ratchet), then pull it tight.
Step 3: Protect the Strap
If you're strapping down against anything metal or sharp (like trailers, trays, or toolboxes), chuck on a Tuff Tools Strap Protector to stop wear and tear.
π Straps are tough β but not invincible.
Step 4: Crank It
Pump the handle up and down until your loadβs snug. Tight, but not βsnap a strap and bust your knucklesβ tight.
Step 5: Lock it In
Fold the handle all the way down so it clicks shut. Boom β you're set.
Β
π€Β βItβs Too Tight, I Canβt Get It Loose!β
So, youβve gone full gorilla on the ratchet and now itβs locked up tighter than your mateβs wallet. Donβt panic β hereβs how to undo it without snapping anything (especially your patience).
β οΈ IMPORTANT β READ THIS FIRST:
If youβve tightened the strap too much, thereβs a good chance that pressing the red release lever and pushing the handle down wonβt do squat.
Thatβs because the mechanism is under too much pressure to release.
π Youβll need to relieve some tension first β donβt just reef on it or youβll risk bending the gear.
Step 1: Find the Release Lever
Look for the little red metal tab just under the ratchet handle. Thatβs the release lever.
Hold it down firmly β no tapping, youβve gotta commit.
Step 2: Open It All the Way
While holding the release tab, swing the handle all the way back until it lies flat.
β
This will disengage the ratchet β if it doesnβt move, skip to the next step to sort it out.
Step 3: Push Down Slightly
Push down gently on the top bar while the handle is fully open β this takes the pressure off the spool.
π You might need to lean into it a bit if the strap was cranked down hard.
Step 4: Pull the Strap Free
Now the strap should slide back through easily.
Still stuck? Give it a wiggle, maybe some sweet talk β or just blame your mate who tied it down.
Step 5: Still No Luck?
If itβs still jammed after all that β chances are youβve gone full Hulk and cooked it.
The strap might be damaged or the ratchet twisted from over-tightening.
π Lesson learned: tight is good, but thereβs such a thing as too tight.
If you're really stuck, shoot us a photo and weβll see what we can do.
